[ASAP] ASAP Digest, Vol 1, Issue 15

Bill---here is a copy of the nearly final draft. It still has to be tweaked for typos.

Copies of the draft were passed around at St. Ann's on Sunday. The reaction was supportive but some are disappointed that the language is not more pointed. Here is what I told them:.

The resolution reminds us that the Baptismal Covenant commits us to "respect the dignity of every human being." It states that we recognize and affirm the value of our LGBTQ members but that the Bishop's decision has "painfully excluded" them from the full sacramental ministry of the Church " in our diocese." In other words, we respectfully suggest that the Bishop is wrong.

The resolution calls for the formation of a task force to engage with members of the Diocese in "continued prayer, study, and conversation"---the Bishop's own words-- over this issue and report back to the next Convention. While not calling on the Bishop to change his mind, which would be inappropriate, the resolution recognizes the possibility that he could, in light of these discussions, reverse or revise his decision and asks that all clergy and laity support him should he do so.

I will send a clean copy as soon as I get one from Rick. Although some of our members may miss the subtle import of these clauses, the Bishop will not.

Henry

Ps. Who is ASAP? I have received a request that they want to use St Ann's for meetings and that we are being asked to waive our standard fee of $25 per meeting for outside groups. Can you fill me in?

feel free to call me at 6115-252-2363

Gibson, Henry Walker who is the Senior Warden at St. Ann's e-mailed me last week that they are in the process of crafting a resolution to present to the Diocesan Convention in January opposing the Bishop's action. It has to be submitted by tomorrow to be included in Convention business. I hope to see a copy when they are finished. I am copying Henry on this e-mail so that all efforts can be coordinated. They want other congregations involved as well. Certainly Fletch and I are opposed to what the Bishop is trying to do.

This message is in response to several people that have considered changing their pledge in response to Bishop Bauerschmidt's position on gay marriage in the Diocese of Tennessee. Your clergy and vestry need to hear from you, in order to gauge the impact on their fiscal plans and to craft a means by which they can honor your request not to contribute to the Diocese.
For many of you, including those at Christ Church, your vestries are formulating next year's budget and planning on changes for 2016. Time is of the essence to communicate your concerns to your clergy and vestry, so please take time today and write your clergy and vestry members to explain your intentions.

Thanks,

Becca and the Advisory Board of St. Augustine's would like to invite the group to meet, at least initially, at the A-frame chapel on the Vanderbilt campus, 200 24th Avenue South.

The Vanderbilt students go home for the holidays on December 13, so parking is much easier after that date.

Gibson, to coordinate at date and time, please contact Jes Williams at the chapel, jes at staugustineschapel.org.

Peace,
Connally Penley
